Cut Out Camp to Fitzroy Camp via Cobboboonee Camp 23rd October 2025 22km

Woke sore and sorry after a very restless night and a little bit cold too, which is unexpected in our cozy wee tent.

Late start again, still a bit disorganised but sure that will improve.

Very pleasant walking this morning, a bit cool and once we were getting warmed up, I think we were making good progress. Still having lots of  issues with my foot but elected to go back to double socks today to provide a bit more protection for my toes. Good idea or bad, who knows….

We walked along lots of duck boards again today, still lots of wet and muddy areas. We met a chap called Simon, who is a GSWW volunteer and just out for a short walk checking on damage from storm. Nice chap. Like all the volunteers, very passionate about this trail. It makes it feel very special.

We continued on and the landscape continues to change. Quite undulating and sandy underfoot.

Passing a tour group, I can’t help but jealously notice their small daypacks. They’re headed in the opposite direction but I do believe they get picked up and taken somewhere to sleep and then dropped back at the same place to continue. I’m not sure how I feel about that, Haha….

We make it to Cobboboonee Campsite. As this is only about 11 kms into the day we had already decided to continue onto Fitzroy camp, which is a further 10km or so.     We enjoy our Tuna and laughing cow cheese wraps, top up our drinks and head on our way again.   As we come out of the trees onto a dirt road, there is our new friend Simon waiting. He was feeling bad that he hadn’t offered us a lift to Fitzroy Camp or at the very least taken my pack and dropped it there. I think due to my toenail situation, bless him. Not only that, he also had a couple of muesli bars and some bug spray to ward off the leeches.   We accepted the muesli bars and politely declined the lift. He is a nice fella and slowly my faith in humans is being restored. This certainly inspired us to motor on, Simon said we could be to camp in 3 hours so therefore we will.

The vegetation we are walking through continues to change.  One moment sandy with grasses to the side and then enormous black trees.

About 2 km from camp, something went pop in my shoe and I’m not sure if a nail just came off or what but we’re not there yet.

Arrived at camp about 5.30pm after a solid 8 hours of walking, exhausted and even Stuart is admitting his tiredness.

Getting the camp set up as quickly as we can, so we can think about dinner, but first I need to get this boot off. It is very painful and I have managed create a huge blister underneath the toenail of my big toe, so that’s essentially off and also same with the next in line.  A bit of minor surgery on the blistered nail by Stuart and a whole bunch of expletives ( thank goodness we are alone!) and it is now hidden under a dressing.

To say I am pissed off is quite the understatement.

A lovely spicy beef nachos for dinner and we both commented that it actually had some flavour for once.

Jumped into tent after tidying up, just as it started to rain.!!!
